Course Overview

Are you a healthcare provider who’s new to Heart & Stroke’s PALS courses or who doesn’t use your PALS skills or knowledge often? Then our PALS Provider/PALS Blended Provider course is for you.

Our PALS Provider/PALS Blended Provider course will help you to develop individual skills – as a member of a healthcare team – in simulated real-life situations that mirror your work life in which you’ll need to recognize and respond to cardiopulmonary arrests or other cardiovascular emergencies involving pediatric patients.

These simulations will involve high-quality CPR, high-performance team dynamics and communication, and a systematic approach to pediatric assessment that includes the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence. You will be able to reinforce concepts, undertake skills practice, receive coaching and correction, and refine your abilities before final testing.

This course is offered in two learning formats: the more traditional classroom-based teaching led by one of our instructors; or the blended learning format in which you delve into parts of the curriculum on your own time and at your own pace and then take the instructor-led, in-classroom component when you’re ready. You can choose the format that suits your learning style best.

What’s new and improved about our program

Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork

You’ll no longer be tested individually on your ability to lead a team, especially since many of you might never assume that position in your real-life healthcare role. You and other members of your team will pass – or fail – based on your team’s performance. The reason for the change is that, in a real-life situation, patient outcomes depend largely upon the performance of the entire team, not just one individual.

Blended learning that suits your learning style and your busy life

If you can’t find time to take a course or prefer to learn information at your own pace and not at the pace of a class, you may be better suited to our new blended learning format. The new format’s first of two components is online and self-paced: you review class materials at your own time and wherever you’re most comfortable, complete it at once or in stages, and revisit any of the information whenever you want. You choose to take the second component – in-classroom learning led by one of our instructors – when you feel fully prepared to do so.

CPR Coach is now a stand-alone role

Each PALS course builds upon the newly introduced role of CPR Coach. The new role is critical to patient outcomes: the CPR Coach is able to focus solely on ensuring the patient is receiving high-quality CPR and, by doing so, frees up the Team Leader to focus on the ever-changing elements of running a code. Through teamwork training in the classroom, you will learn how to incorporate the role of CPR Coach into your healthcare environments.
